I REMEMBER

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

An American Celebration of Freedom
martin luther king, jr..jpeg

Listen to the entire play!

Based on the life and times of Martin Luther King, Jr., this youth musical takes on special meaning during Black History Month.  Students take the parts of storytellers, recreating in drama and song various incidents from boyhood to preacher of non-violence - e.g., his playmates, a shoe clerk, his teachers, his wife, "walkers" in the bus boycott, news reporters, people assembled at the "I Have A Dream" speech, etc.,  Many parts for all!

The music used throughout is authentic American spiritual and gospel songs, arranged for unison or two-part singing.  The play is factually accurate, exciting and heart-gladdening, with special emphasis on non-violence.  It requires no sets or costumes, and is delightfully simple for a classroom teacher or music teacher to present.

Perfect for Black History Month, here is an excellent young people’s introduction to the history and the basic instruments of jazz as well as its colorful sound. The setting is a street in the City of New Orleans where Buddy Baker and his band are playing a swinging new kind of music – Jazz! The origins of jazz and its sound take theatrical form as a mother humming a lullaby, an old harmonica player improvising by ear, and children tapping sticks on an old pork barrel. Traditional tunes are mixed in with original “takes” on this quintessential American art form.

GREAT SCOTT!  It's Ragtime!

dreamstime_s_57140111.jpg

Introduce your students to the great American composer, Scott Joplin, and to the syncopation of ragtime music with "Great Scott!  It's Ragtime!'

Beginning with his childhood in Texarkana, where Joplin was born a slave, Joplin's story is one of perseverance and hard work during a time of great change in America.  Historically and musically intriguing, this musical requires no special scenery and has many parts for many students.

This rhythmic and fun music program has been featured at graduation festivities for its theme of how a person from humble beginnings can become an esteemed composer. Some of our schools have enhanced this 20 minute Ragtime play experience by inviting banjo players from their community at large to entertain the audience with some authentic, live – and lively – banjo music!

The book includes all dialogue, simple program notes, music and lyrics. Everything you need to put on your play!
